HUNTSMAN BASKETBALL CENTER

The new Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Center is scheduled to open in August of 2015 northeast of the Huntsman Center arena. The $36-million project also includes a state-of-the-art Utah Athletics Performance Center, which will be located northwest of the arena, and encompasses 80,000-square feet of space.

“This is a major basketball facility that will give us everything we need to be successful,’’ said Utah athletics director Chris Hill. “It’s fantastic.”

The three-story Huntsman Basketball Center will include dedicated practice gymnasiums for the both men’s and women’s basketball teams. The gyms will include viewing balconies and on-site sports medicine facilities equipped with treatment and taping tables, stem machines, sports drink and supplement dispensers, and ice machines.

The men’s and women’s teams will move into new locker rooms—which will include plunge pools—film rooms, and player lounges. There will also be an expansive Hall of Fame area in the building’s atrium and a shared dining room. A new and expanded team laundry and equipment facility will also be part of the project.

The coaching and support staffs for both programs will have their own floor of spacious offices, meeting rooms and recruiting lounges. A large observation deck will be placed on top of the building for team and alumni functions, providing sweeping views of the Wasatch Mountain range, the University of Utah campus, and downtown Salt Lake City.

“We already have the finest [game] facility in the Pac-12 and by the time we finish the additions with this basketball center, no university in America is going to be able to challenge us as far as the wonderful facilities,” said Jon Huntsman, whose name has graced the U. arena for the past 30 years after a major donation. “We’re excited about the Runnin’ Utes for the next many years and we’re going to make this facility, added to the Huntsman Center, the best in America. It’s a community effort.”
